Magen David Synagogue Restoration

The Rededication of the
Magen David Synagogue
in Byculla, Mumbai (Bombay), India.

Read the text of Rabbi Ya’aqob Menashe’s letter on the occasion of the rededication here.

The re-dedication of the Magen David Synagogue was a wonderful affair. It was organized by Mr. Solomon Sopher, Chairman Sassoon Charity Trusts and his staff.

About 250 members attended the function. The Ambassador to Israel (Mr. Mark Sofer) was present. Consul General (Orna Segev) and leading community members too were present.

Mr. Moshe Levy and other members of the generous group who paid substantial sums of money to renovate the amazing Synagogue, built by David Sassoon, were also present.

Dazzling floral decorations and lighting greeted the attendees. Vegetarian dinner was served in the open grounds to all those who attended.

If you are planning a trip to Mumbai (Bombai), India, please contact Mr. Solomon Sopher here and pray at one of the famous Sassoon Synagogues.

November 30, 2010

Dear Mr. Sopher,

It is with gratitude to the Holy One Blessed Be He that I am able to write this letter to you on the auspicious occasion of the rededication of the magnificent Magen David Synagogue in Byculla. It is heart warming to know that the extraordinary efforts you have made to keep the Synagogue flourishing have been rewarded.

Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude go out to Mr. Moshe Levy and his family for this truly noble and holy act on their part, of restoring the splendor to this great institution. May they receive manifold blessings for this noble act.

As you know, it was built by my great, great, great grandfather, Dawid Sasson, and has served generations of Jews over the years. We can now be assured that, through Mr. Levy’s generous act, it will continue to do so for generations to come.

I am truly sorry that I was unable to be with you all in Mumbai for this very auspicious and, indeed, historical occasion. By the Grace of Heaven, however, I hope to be with you to admire the renovations and celebrate with the entire community on the occasion of the impending 150th anniversary.

On behalf of all at Midrash BEN ISH HAI, my mother, my family and myself, please convey our warmest wishes and hopes and aspirations for the future to Mr. Moshe Levy and our entire Jewish community in Mumbai.

With great gratitude to you personally for your tireless and selfless dedication to our holy community, I pray that G-d will give you the health and strength to carry on your holy endeavors on behalf of our community for years to come, Amen.

With warm personal regards,

Rabbi Ya’aqob Menashe
