'The Midrash BEN ISH HAI Message and Discussion Area': Other Jewish Religious Topics: Calendar years

I am trying to find out some information about the jewish calendar. I understand that it's different than our American one. We are studying the book of Revelations in the Holy Bible and the teacher asked us what Jewish year it is. He seems to think that it is 5950 or 5975. Can you help me on this subject? Thank you.
